Intergenerational Collaboration (and How to Write a Cookbook)

June 12 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm PDT

Virtual Event Virtual Event

OpenWater was founded on the idea that the wisdom of seasoned professionals has value. When the deeply experienced and the newcomers work together, magic happens. There is perhaps no better illustration of how different generations can learn from and collaborate with each other than the cookbook Maman and Me.

Written by Roya Shariat and her mother, Gita Sadeh, Maman and Me is not only a labor of familial love, it’s also a representation of love (and work) around tradition, culture and, of course, delicious food.

In this webinar, Roya and Gita will walk you through how they came together to produce this wonderful cookbook, and share their tips for how they worked together. As a bonus, if you’ve ever thought about writing a cookbook, they’ll walk you through the process and what to expect.

About the Speakers

ROYA SHARIAT is a Brooklyn-based writer and social impact professional. Roya has worked for leading brands and organizations including Glossier, Chobani, the ACLU, and the Rockefeller Foundation. Roya writes a weekly newsletter on food and culture called “Consumed” — her cooking TikTok has nearly 200K followers and her cooking IG has over 120K followers, and her debut cookbook “Maman and Me” came out this past October.
GITA SADEH is a Maryland-based chef and early childhood educator. Gita has over four decades of teaching experience and five decades of culinary experience. Gita is known for her cooking online and offline — she has catered events and gatherings from her home kitchen and taught Iranian cooking classes to families throughout the DC metropolitan area. Her thousands of fans on TikTok call her “the CEO of tahdig,” “a comforting queen,” and most commonly, “our mom.”
