Barsac, Barbera, and a Little Bit of Dave Matthews – Wine Recommendations with Heath Porter
Buying wine doesn’t have to be so nerve wracking. It should be fun, exciting and even affordable. To help, we brought in sommelier and owner of Heathen Wine Tours, Heath Porter.
Heath grew up in a teetotaling family in a trailer park in Alabama before leaving home to embark on his own vino journey, earning national awards and prestigious positions at high-end resorts such as Sea Island Resort in Georgia and The Greenbrier in West Virginia. After opening his own restaurants in Miami, Heath launched Heathen Wine Tours, taking small groups to fine wineries around the world. He also created Heathen Wines, his own craft wine label.
In this talk, Heath offers straightforward advice for buying wine (avoid the middle shelf at the grocery store), introduces you to lesser-known-but-amazing wine regions (hello, Barsac!), and why you should look at the alcohol content when selecting wine.
Even better for OpenWater members, Heath is bringing his somm talents to our platform, helping head up our own OpenWater wine channel, where he’ll answer questions and make recommendations.
